Flank / Rear charge and Cohesion tests

Had a situation arise on the weekends game that I'd like a clarification on.
We had two cavalry units in close combat and during the Impact phase a BG of HF made a legal Flank charge into the enemy cavalry BG already involved in close combat. According to p55 the BG being charged immediately drops a cohesion level. p57 states that the bases fighting against a flank or rear charge in the impact phase always fight on a net -- POA. My opponent subsequently lost the impact fight but was of the opinion that a cohesion test was not required (which could result in a further cohesion drop) because the unit had already dropped a cohesion level automatically due to the flank charge. I successfully argued that the initial drop in cohesion is a penalty for being flank charged and that the subsequent CT for losing the Impact should be treated separately, but said I would get confirmation. Is my understanding of this area correct?
