If a friend from Texas is on a PC and I'm in Sydney on an iPad, would we be still able to play by email?

Yes as long as you both can connect to the server.

I believe I need to register to play pbem. I've searched slitherine.com but can not find an obvious 'register here' link. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Click on the lizard at the top of this screen. Click on login. Log in with your forum name and password. If you can see your name and links in the middle you are all set. I think.

Then to initiate a PBEM game, I open BA via my device, choose "Multiplayer", login and issue/accept a challenge, yes?

If I wanted to play against a specific opponent (ie a friend),how do I issue a private challenge?

If you play PBEM it will automatically register you. If you have a forum account you are already registered and you should use the same details in PBEM. If you don't you'll end up creating a new account and have 2 usernames and passwords to remember.
