shooting at rear bases

In our game today had a unit of 3 deep cuirassier charge into a unit of Frenchies. Off to the side was a unit of artillery that could shoot at the rear of the cuirassier. Looked in the rules and it says you can shoot at the rear bases, but it does not specify any reduction in dice for shooting at a unit in contact with enemy.
In FOG R you shoot as disrupted for shooting at a base whose unit is in contact with enemy. In FOGN you can shoot at full dice?

Just found it odd since you lose dice for not being able to trace a clear line of sight to a target, but you can shoot toward your own guys and not worry about it :?

Personally I don't see a problem with this. Units in FOGN are not solid blocks of men, but multiple lines with significant gaps between them. The units in the third line of cavalry in deep formation are perhaps up to 200m from the actual melee, being kept in reserve until required. It is worth noting, however, that if the artillery in this case were in a large unit they could have their dice reduced if the third rank bases of the cavalry are only partially in front of a single base of the artillery.

unfortunately it was clear shooting on my cav. Thanks for the answer, just seemed kind of odd at the time.

So, if I understand correctly, units in melee can be valid targets for both players

?

Guys,

Page 48, left hand column last para covers who you can shoot at in contact.

Not sure it could fire though, as only units within 2MU of the charge can give supporting fire

This was the firing phase, after the charge had gone in.

The Austrian cuirassiers were 3 bases deep and the French artillery was off to their flank. The rule states you may not fire at a base in contact with enemy or a base that is touching a base in contact with enemy. The third row of cuirassiers bases were valid targets. Or that, in essence, was the original question.

3rd row of bases is a valid target, I had just found it odd that you got to shoot at them with no penalty like dice reduction. Sorry if some of you were confused.

Can I just correct you here. It is a -POA, so harder to hit, not a reduction in the shooters.

Perhaps Terry would consider adding to the rules at some stage.

What about squares then. Suppose a square is contacted in one corner by enemy. Which bases, if any, would be eligible targets for firing purposes?

Small Unit in square = no targets (every base touches each other, so if one is in contact...).
Large Unit in square = possible target at the opposite end of contact.

Dead.'s point was that he thought there should have been some -poa or such effect for shooting so close into your own troops/into combat (i.e., we were thinking back to FoGR but brains were a tad cloudy on it since it's been since before last March that we played it)(been doing FoGN religiously since!!).
