Is FOG a little too random?

Interested in hearing what others have to say.

Because of several levels of chance there seems to be a very high degree of randomness in the game?

The ++ -- etc gives enough of a bias one way or the other for a fight, along with the number of dice thrown, 2,3,4 etc. If i understand it correctly AFTER that has been decided there is then a very high random factor applied to how many men are killed depending on the number of hits.

As the number of hits were themselves open to a reasonable random factor does there need to be anything like such a high randomness in the kills? It seems very easy for one side to get more hits and then kill less men.

I have no problem with a random element to the game but it seems excessive...

What do others think??

Andy

Yes, I think lots of us would agree with you. An earlier debate is here . . .

I am a huge fan of Panzer Coprs, another slitherine game i play 20 X more than i play field of glory. Why? Because luck is to high a factor in FOG.

In panzer corps you get a likely percentage losses display when you hover over an opponent. When you actually attack sometimes things go as planned and sometimes one side does much better than anticipated. However at least 80% or more of the time the results are close to what was anticipated.

I would say that in FOG you get a display of percentage chances but they prove correct no more than 5% of the time. At least 90% of the time one side does MASSIVELY better than the other side, and it is VERY often the side that was expected to lose.

The only redeeming feature at all is that the results are so entirely random it kind of works out in the end.

Any chance that in FOG V2 we could perhaps have 2 settings in the preferences. "Like FOG 1" and "Greatly reduced randomness" that should actually be a very simple codeing problem, merely a look up of the appropriate table and it keeps those of us who want less randomness happy as well as those who want as much as now.

Just my suggestion
