number of kills in GC

Hi,
I understand that the number of kills recorded in the units combat history sheet counts only those where the unit actually finished off an enemy unit.
Where do the other kills go besides to increase the prestige? Or is this only counted as "damage". And has "damage" in this sense any influence in obtaining medals or hero bonuses?
So how is (in GC !!) the number of kills (or "damage") the unit caused related to the numbers neccessary for obtaining medals and heroes?
Obviously "damaging" thousands of enemy units down to strength 1 but never finishing one off will result in "Zero kills" in the record; and this would mean that this unit could never receive a medal or a hero bonus because no kills are counted in the record.
This can obviously not be true, so what is the case?
Thanks
Paul
