Road 'Trick"

I have noticed a few "tricks" that I thought I would post just to make people aware. They are not cheats or wrong, just I think people should note them and not be ovely surprised. And also To help verify that I din't get the rules wrong.

Roads.

Actually my evil Austrian opponents planned it but as I moved first i got to do it to him.

At deployment battery starts on road limbered. When moving on a road your speed is doubled. So the battery makes its first move and zips down the road. Then it CMTs for its 2nd move and unlimbers as a formation change.

Voila. Battery shockingly close at end of first move. In this case it unlimbered at 6 MU from a deep Hungarian regiment.

Underscores also not to leave a road towards yor flank without something to screen it.

A very natty trick.

Knowing my luck I'd fail my CMT to unlimer and my opponent (the cunning Rookie GibbyJ) would advance a light infantry towards me in skirmish formation and blow me away!

My Austrians tried this in my last game, they even passed their CMT to unlimber! Seemed like a good idea at the time ...

.. Sadly however the supporting infantry did not manage to double move to keep up, leaving the artillery unit unsupported. Threatened by enemy the guns limbered up again the following turn to allow them to evade the inevitable charge they now faced.

oh well

As a counter to this trick I normally place my compulsary road at an angle.
As already pointed out though - your artillery could end up out on a limb without infantry support.

Always best to move the infantry up first, then the speedy guns. Much safer for the artillery.
