Confused about expansions

I am confused about expansions - the descriptions on Slitherine's site lists various features for the different expansions.

E.g. Immortal Fire lists "enhanced A.I." as one of its features - does that mean that as long as I don't buy that specific expansion, I am playing against an inferior AI? Or does this enhancement come in all expansions as new or newer than Immortal Fire? Or retro-fitted to all the expansions? Or is it even included in newer versions of the base game? (And that's just an example - several other expansions lists unique improvements...)

Which expansions would people recommend? I can probably only afford one or two to start with (possibly three if there is a really strong argument to get that many).

As far as theme goes, being born in Scandinavia, but living in Britain nowadays, Wolves from the Sea sounds the most interesting to me. However, that is not available yet - any idea when it will become available?

Thanks!

Hi enhorning, welcome to FOG!

All the improvements released in the expansions are available to ALL players, even if you just own the base game. The biggest value of the expansion is to enable you to play with the DAG (create your own army from lists) armies in that expansion. They do add scenarios too, but there are many community-generated scenarios that are as good.

Wolves from the Sea will be fun...but it may not be the most varied expansion, the armies look similar. I hate to say it, but my best guess would be early 2013, since they are currently re-writing the entire FOG programme.

If you want Britain/Scandinavian theme, I'd get Storm of Arrows. WOTRoses, HYW, Danish and Swedish armies, combined with Scots and Irish armies that will play similarly to the Vikings.

I think if I was buying only one expansion, I would buy Immortal Fire - I think it has the widest variety of armies. A good counter-point to Storm of Arrows at the opposite end of the world and era.

I agree with davouthojo that "Storm of Arrows" and "Immortal Fire" would make a very good pair of expansions to start with. Also, some of us spend a lot of time making scenarios for the game. Some eventually get included in the official expansions but many others can be downloaded from this thread . . .
