Are GS game events triggered by dates or by turn number?

I'm pretty certain the nation entry dates in the "scn" files are triggered by the game date, but what about some of the Grand Strategy specific event triggers that have been added to the game? I believe there are event triggers for USSR entry (when not attacked in 1941), and possibly several others like USA, Polish, & Balkan country entry.

What I'm getting at here is a question about what would happen to these event triggers if someone modded the start date of the game to 1936 or 1938. I'm not sure we can even adjust the start date so maybe this question is moot, but if we can edit the start date I'd like to know whether GS game events are triggered by dates or by turn number.

Hope the question makes sense, and thanks in advance for any responses.

Just did a playtest. It's turn and not date that matters. A bit of trivia; when the Germany declaring war on Poland event happened and then the USSR invading eastern Poland event happen on the same turn none of Poland was Soviet; on that turn at any rate.

Buddy,

You may wish to read the GS 2.1 Manual. There are two things among others that should help. The URL to the latest GS 2.1 Manual is in another posting in this forum, try: http://www.gs.manual.org

First, there is a full game calendar that note turns and dates -- along with historical references and game triggered events.

Second, there is a DoW and side change summary that may be useful.

Lastly, there are other triggered events/actions not in summaries but are important -- such as Swedish Iron Ore supply to Axis and the oil/PP improvement of the Axis conquering Yugoslavia and Greece. There are in the Logistics & Historical sections.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies guys.

Samhain : Interesting - that test was just for Poland and the USSR move into Eastern Poland, or did you sim a little further as well?

amcdonel: The manual is likely not going to provide the answer I'm looking for here. It describes dates with the assumption the player is playing the un-modded GS game, but what I'm talking about is an edited version where the game begins at a different time than 1939 (1936, for example). I know some events like Free France are triggered by game events, but I'm not certain about all the other date related events that are basically hard coded in the game (the ones not editable via the general & scn text files). I expect to find out shortly anyway and will report on my findings, I just figured the GS developers would know without hesitation if there were any game date event that were actually triggered by game turn number.

Just in case anyone else is interested in this I ran a 1936-1940 test. The only game events triggered by turn number appear to be the UK and French entry into the war. Everything else appears to be date or event triggered.

Edit: Hrm, I should actually be able to change the UK and France starting "at war" status in the scn file, I forgot their setting was defaulted to being at war at the start of the game 8) .

Edit 2: It could be that many events are triggered by turn number, but perhaps the question is moot anyway, since pre September 1939 turns are counted as negative numbers. Example: Starting the game in September 1936 would be treated like turn -49 in the game.
