Fire Combat Clarification

I have a couple of questions regarding fire combat that I have not been able to find in the forum that I need some help with.

1. P53 On the To-Hit-Score table, the second bullet point for the asterisk note limits this to infantry starting within 1 BW of the firer's front. I'm assuming this includes chargers starting in the firer's support area and not just those starting "directly in front". Assuming that the charger's final position allows firing, is this correct?

2. P54 The Results-of-Firing table has as the result of receiving 3 hits: "Retire to 3 MU if closer or are wavering, otherwise may not advance". I do not understand what the "wavering" conditions adds to this? Either the wavering unit is closer than 3 MU or is not. If closer, the first condition forces the retire anyway. If further away it can't advance. What outcomes that include wavering am I missing?

Thanks,

Nigel.

We interpreted that as "Retire to 3 MU if closer, or Retire if wavering, or otherwise no advance." That is, wavering units have to roll on the Outcome Moves (D6+4). This is based on pg 55, LH point 4, where it says that if no fire is at close range, the wavering unit retires (and if any fire is at close range, even if it doesn't cause a hit, the wavering unit breaks).

Thanks Jason, that makes sense.

Yes, this means the zone to front and within a base width to either side, which occupies the same space as the support area where that applies.

2. Agreed.
