Do we consider the PD as a whole, or each base is to be considered ?
In a concrete exemple , a 6 archers unit, in column, can place a 1-base stake.
Assuming the BG then moves, and losses this stake, does he still have 2-bases stakes remaining ?

Don't listen to Phil on this. I think it is commonly ruled that it all or nothing.
I am not saying you're question or even Phil's response are il logical. But this was debated on a thread some time back and I "think" the author or some one had the opposite view based on some wording in the rules.
The argument in part for dis-allowing is to end gamey moves. Which could conceivably happen.

The BG has sufficient stakes to cover the frontage of a 2 deep formation. If it places stakes, they must be picked up before moving or the BG loses its stakes capability.

If it places stakes, they must be picked up before moving or the BG loses its stakes capability.
So a BG with 8 bases is 3 wide and places PO. It then expands whilst in combat. What happens to the PO?

The battle group has not made a manoever in the movement phase, therefore the PO's stay put. The bases that expand do not "take" PO's with them.

You can always put more down as long as the enemy they were fighting have gone away.

A BG that has placed and not picked up its PD cannot place any more. Its in the rules Dave.

Where?
Page 121 very last sentence on the page (Phil almost quoted it in entirety) : "A BG that has placed and not picked up its PD cannot place more PD." It doesn't matter whether the BG expands or moves or stays stationary as that is not a requirement of the rule.

Clearly his visit to New England taught Dave nothing. He still refuses to read the rules and learn the game.
