Commando Tactics (Sealion)

I finished up the Sealion scenario pack a few nights ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed the commando missions. It was great fun trying to sneak your commandos around the map undetected, picking off unsuspecting Nazi units. One thing I've found is that using a mixture of the sniper and the auxiliary units makes for a powerful force.

Some basics here.
All commandos have the scouting ability of scouts.
The all creep for movement at full speed so always shoot at full power.
They can "super sneak" in cover right up to an enemy in the next square.
The close assaults are silent death. Nearby enemies don't hear the attack.

So the tactics work like this. First, position your sniper in such a way that he can snipe several targets. the reason is that when he actually uses his snipe ability, he cannot move. It is an auto-kill on 1 man and it also delivers 80 points of suppression to the target.

On the turn your sniper sets up, move an auxiliary toward an enemy target so that he can observe them with his scouting ability. On the following turn, snipe the target. 1 man will be killed and the target will be suppressed. Now move your auxiliary to an adjacent square and close assault. You can either move normally or use the supper sneak to do it. Normal move is usually sufficient if no other enemies can interfere.

On the "Butcher and Bolt" scenario, I was able to attack the center of the map with this method and then went two pronged around the air field with the sniper/auxiliary combination. Worked like a charm.

The shore battery scenario, you only have a single sniper. I used it first to stun an MG pillbox guarding the forward battery. Then for crossing the bridge, I creeped an auxiliary to the center of the bridge to scout a pill box on the other side. The sniper then sniped from my side of the river, stunning the crew. The auxiliary was then able to move in for the kill on the next turn.

Great stuff really. I very much enjoyed the whole scenario pack but the commando missions were among my favorites of all the content!

Glad you enjoyed it :). While Sealion is a 'fictional' campaign, all of the units were authentic, and from that some of the tactics we could make use of in the missions were too.

I do enjoy Sealion, both the mission design and the unique look of dear old Blighty ;).

Cheers
