Brigade moves, assaults and CMT's

Can I assault (charge) as a Brigade group ? Or must I do so by unit ?

If the units in the group need a CMT to charge (or one of them does ) is it one test for the group ?

If the group is shot at and takes a hit (or more) then is it one CMT test to force the assault for the group ?

e.g. 2 units, one disordered - want to charge an enemy unit (or a pair of adjacent units)

If I test per unit then I may need 3 CMT tests - and hence 3 command points if I have to move and test individually
Only 2 if I can move and test as a group.

Nice question, I hadn't thought of this.

We have always played that brigade groups are for moving in the movement phase. Assaults are carried out by unit.
There is some support for this in that on page 27, under Troops Allowed to Assault, it says:

"Only Infantry or Cavalry can make an assault move. To do so a unit must satisfy the following criteria:" (underline added). The following page then goes on to list the criteria. The 'a unit' loosly implies that assaulting is done a (ie single) unit rather than as a group.

Given that:

- there is an arguement that page 27 specifies asaults should be carried out by single units;
- there is no reference in the rules to assaults by brigade groups being permitted;
- to allow group assaults might cause additional issues (ie if one unit of the brigade group is driven back by fire, what does the other unit do?);
- the game is better if CPs are generally tight and allowing Brigade Group attacks would lesson the demand for CPs.

I would take the view you cannot assault as a brigade move

I just found the definitive answer on page 38, Left habd side, 4th bullet point: "Units cannot move as a Brigade Group when moving into contact with enemy."
