"Support" Definitions Clarification

Requirements for "support" to count are defined in several places, so to understand the complete definition we must look at both the Flank Support and Rear Support definitions at p56-57 and the Glossary at p108. A conflict is added by the definition of Rear Support on p107, however.

To make this most easily understandable, I summarize this in a table :
(corrections in blue hue)

Table Abbreviations for Support Conditions:
IA: Must be non-Skirmishing inf to support Inf/Art
CV: Must be Cav to support Cav (worded differently on p56 and p57 but with equivalent meaning)
SD: Must be Stdy/Dsd (or not Wavering, which I treat as the same, since no one would think Broken units could provide flank support)
POOR: Some better troops can't be supported by a Poor unit
PR: Positioned for Rear Support (behind/in reach/support cap; cav & square/obstacle)
PF: Positioned for Flank Support (Support Area, base width, not in combat)

Table:
p56 Flank Supporter:___ CV SD PF (incomplete, omitting IA and POOR)
p57 Rear Supporter:__IA CV SD PR (Incomplete, omitting POOR)
108 Supporter:______ IA CV SD____POOR (Incomplete, omitting PR)

107 Rear Support(er):______SD + non-Skirmish, to the rear of Supported is sufficient

p57 & 107 p57 Rear Supported: Deep Large Unit may self-support for combat dice
p69 adds that Conscripts if rear supported by another Unit (or in Defensive Position) get an extra 1 dice for Cohesion test only

This is all consistent once read together, except for p107 which creates rules conflicts for Rear Supporters:
  • (1) it omits the IA and CV restrictions of p57 for Rear Supporters
    (2) it mentions being to the rear as a Positional Requirement (as does p57), but omits the reach and support cap reqts of p57
    (3) adds a non-Skirmisher requirement (which already exists for IA but NOT in CV)
My guess is that the Rear Support definition on p107 is an old draft version that failed to be updated, and should be deleted or replaced with an accurate definition (plus cross-references to the relevant pages). It would be helpful if the POOR requirement on p108 could be added to the Flank Support and Rear Support sections on p56-57 and IA to the Flank Support one.

Anything wrong in the above analysis?

Infantry and artillery can provide flank support to infantry. Cavalry can support cavalry. This support is a combat support and adds dice to the attacker.
Cav can not provide flank support versus squares, or enemy defending an obstacle.

Page 107 I agree it seems like a vague version of the rear support restrictions, go with the rules on page 56-57

Page 69: conscripts that are rear supported by another unit to their rear or are in a defensive position get 1 extra die to their cohesion test. They get 2 dice to try and pass the test instead of their usual 1 die. They do not gain any extra dice in combat. Unless that is what you had thought but it looked to me as if you were referring to combat and rear support only.
Looks like you have a handle on it

I disagree with the first part. The only restriction created by "Infantry and artillery cannot support cavalry" is that only Cavalry can support Cavalry, so I noted it that way in the table as CV.

Absent p108, the implication of the Flank Support section would be that Infantry or Artillery are not restricted from supporting either Infantry or Artillery, but this paragraph says nothing specifically on the point. P108 does apply the IA restriction (must be non-skirmishing Infantry to support Infantry or Artillery).

So Flank Support p 56 is consistent with p108, but additionally incomplete beyond omitting the Poor bullet. I added a note to that effect and also changed the old ASG reference to POOR plus other edits prompted by your post.

Also clarified p69 to flag that the page is about CTs
