Superior Conscript Infantry in 6's - Good Attack unit

Looking at the FOGN generic list on page 132 of the main rulebook and superior conscript infantry in 6's (66pts a battlegroup) seems a good "buy"...
two bases wide, three deep in effect a Column.... do they get support pluses?

1. They give themselves rear support for combat.
2. They need a unit of infantry behind them to give them rear support for cohesion tests.

that seems fine... put the points into either using the cav as rear support or using the small units of none milita as flank/rear support....
massed landwehr has to be a giggle.... especially if you actually go and win with them...
can average support superior as per fogr or is it more like fogam...( like for like or better)

Cav can only support cav
Infantry can support infantry and artillery, so forget about putting your cav out back.
Quality does not make any difference for support in FOGN, so you can have conscripts supporting veteran grenadiers if you want, however the conscripts only get rear support for cohesion tests if an actual unit is behind them, being 3 deep won't help them get that extra die. They can also get it by defending an obstacle or other defensive position, so should be the first choice to man the walls and field fortifications.

@deadtoruis: thanks for that. I take it conscripts superior or average are still better as sixes as they can ignore the first hit. Put the points into decent commanders div/bde to ensure you have a pip for cmt tests

The catch with the conscripts is only getting 1 die on a CMT (as the French found out yesterday)!

The 1 CMT dice is the fly in the chardonay for using conscripts as assualt troops.
Even if they are large or superior (and ignore a hit when they charge), they are still likely to take a single hit and need to CMT to charge home.
Having an attached general helps (pass CMT on a 4+), but it is still only a 50:50 propisition.
But they are 30% cheaper in points ...
Cheers
Brett

glossary of terms page 108
...a unit can only provide support for another unit if it is :
4th bullet : average or superior if the supported unit is superior or guard
i found today that glossary of terms has many thinks that doesnt exist in the main rules!!!!

I have found the divisional attached really impacts the range of additional CMTs and should be noted carefully. Brigade commanders of course solve this.

This is a natural miss since the definitions on p56-57 appear to lay out all the conditions. The Support definition issue deserves its own thread.[Added thread]

never noticed that since neither of us can have superior or guard foot troops at present, perhaps some day I can get some really good Austrians out of some other list, but not in the lists we have for now.

I could have Hesse Darsmtadt Lieb Garde (Ave Dr Gd) in 1813.
I could have:
Swiss Infantry (Sup Dr)
Hessian Guard (Ave Vet Gd)
Polish Infantry (Sup Dr)
but my fave is:
Neapolitan Gardes d'Honneur Light Cavalry (Poor Drilled Guards)
But none of the superior conscripts though.

Afraid you need
enfans de la patrie for that.

He needs to wait for the real army list books to come out, then he can try his old guard units, that should make for a nice small army.
I would be happy if I could find some more superior troops for the Austrians, hopefully they will show up in the army list books.

Probably all mounted on horses or wearing bearskin hats.
Even the HochundDeutschmeister Line should just be Veteran

Also remember your deep unit is easier for Arty to hit

Strangely only at long range

Not strange. It basically means that deep massed targets at long range are as worth shooting at as most targets at medium range. More casualties, and even more effect on cohesiveness, than against linear targets.

I think the game advantages are with deploying wide not deep if in 6s.

I agree, unless you are trying to concentrate numbers of units on a small frontage.
