First game - or should I say try out. Used the French-Austrian OB from the fast play.

It was slow going, lots of rule and procedure look ups. Mostly things worked out, we (my opponent and I) really liked some of the mechanics. The command point system was good (we used ADC figure - a great look) and we both liked how it controlled your actions, no having enough to get all my attackers into combat (take a hit and you need a point). Also liked that shooting (at range) can't break a unit.

Couple of questions

Grenzer is a skirmisher ? The fast play list Grenzer separately in shooting

die loss for cavalry within 6 - this seemed to have some issues
cavalry is in base contact
cavalry is to side or behind the infantry and facing a different direction (or in combat)

Yes they have to remain in skirmish all the time if irregular, can be conscript line otherwise. If you look in the sample army list in the back of the rules you will see the Grenzer restrictions listed.

simulates skirmishers being driven back by cav presence. Saves the Austrians from a lot of shooting, you must have been french. Only affects reformed shooting or skirmish fire at med range only. It does not affect line troops or artillery shooting at close range.

The enemy cavalry only needs to be within 6MU of the firers.
For the cavalry to have an effect while being behing the enemy infantry you would have to be within 4MU of them. At this stage youu have 3 optiond:
1) advance to within 2MU - at which range the cavalry have no effect.
2) Stay where you are and fire with 3 dice
3) Fall back to over 4MU and fire at full effect.

With Grenzers I'd suggest option 3 is the best bet.
