Scoresheet

Hi Terry
I thought I would give some feedback on the tournament scoresheet downloadable on the FOGN site, which we used this at the Natcon tournament.
1. While it seems simple enough to me, the players seemed to have a great deal of trouble figuring out how it worked and I usually had to go over it with them at the end of each game to work out the points. Not sure why this was, however for our upcoming Nicon tournament in June I'll give everyone an 'explanation sheet', - which I've attached to the end of this post (in italics).
2. I have assumed that if your army breaks, then your attrition point losses will be all 100% - ie all of them. So points awarded for own army will be '0' and correspondingly the winner will get 10 points for Opponent's losses.
(a) To assume otherwise means that the 30:10 and 40:20 victory level rules don't work. If the game ended after a 30:10, the victor would be denied further competition points available in inflicting further losses. The points for a 30:10 would then be 17:8, (or 18:7 if the victor suffered less than 1 ACV losses).
(b) Given that no army in the 4-hour competition rounds that we played reached 50% losses, the 30:10 and 40:20 victory rules are needed in order to get results in a tournament.
3. So, assuming that an army which breaks counts as all lost, the way the scoresheet works out is that a 30:10 win will always mean points of 24:1 (although in one of our games it was actually a 25:0 - a British army inflicted 30% losses on their Franco-Italian opponents for a loss of only 1 spent cavalry unit! This was the only time I have seen this done in 2 years of playtesting however).
4. For a 40:20 win, it looks like the points will always be 23:2.
5. All of the rows from 6 to 10 in the scoresheet for points lost are not needed. The "Attrition Points Lost" listed in these rows are all over 50%, so the army will have broken anyway and count as entirely lost.
6. There is probably not enough range in the points when you get a (30:10, or 40:20) win - given that it is pretty much always going to be 24:1 or 23:2 for such results. I would suggest that the "Attrition Points Lost" in the scoresheet be in multiples of 5% of the total ACV, with an extra row for less than 5%. The losses being rounded up to the nearest 0.5 (as we have 1/2 ACV losses for cavalry). I cannot seem to attach a xl spreadsheet to this post containing a so-modified scoresheet as an example, but will email this to you Terry, in case you are interested.
Anyway, to the scoresheet clarification that I will give to Nicon entrants:
1. Points are awarded for the percentage of troops remaining in your army (up to 10 points) plus the percentage of losses inflicted on your opponent (up to 10 points).
2. If your army breaks, “Attrition points lost” are the same as your “Army Size”.
3. 5 bonus points are also available for allocation in each game:
(a) If you break your opponent you recieve all 5 bonus points.
(b) The 5 bonus points for occupying an enemy LOC are only awarded if there is no outright victory.
(c) The 5 bonus points available for defending and for remaining cavalry are only awarded if there is no outright victory, and neither party has captured the enemy LOC.
Cheers
Brett
