(15mm essex miniatures and Magister militum miniatures mixed)
I have chosen the Battle of Kulm in 1813

I began the 23th Division of the general Teste


the french officer on foot complains to him that the enemy had broken his gun;-)

the french regiments are organised as
one staff bataillon colonel+sapper+drummers of the regiment

1st bataillon white little standard
2nd bataillon red standard
third bataillon blue standard

organised as follow
from left to right on the pic
the grenadier company (red with red "épaulettes")
first company of fusiliers (green)
second company of fusiliers( blue)
third company of fusiliers( dark yellow"aurore")back rankers
fourth company (violet purple)back rankers
voltigeurs ( bright yellow with green " épaulettes)
sorry I don't know the translation in english " perhaps something like shoulder I think

the french artillery
the main advantage to begin with new set of rules and you have nothing painted is that you have nothing to rebase
so I opted for this representation of my 6pdr foot Artillery

the limberded version with the artillery caisson
the horses are white for the first battery
then the unlimbered version with their crews
then the abandonned guns, I have put the gunners on 40x15 bases to represent the abandonned guns when needed;

Très beau.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. For the record, English has the word Epaulettes (the shoulder straps) which comes from épaulettes - so I think everyone understood your comment on that.

I will represent the conscripts with greatcoats, the drilled with their uniforms and the veterans with a mix of greatcoats and uniforms
the line infantry 8 per base
the light infantry 6 per base
the skirmish formations 4 shooters per base randomly arranged on it with some bush, rocks and trees;

I will paint a second division for May 2012

I agree with Paul, very nice. My only quibble is that your artillery crew look too clean. Dirty them up a bit after all, they've been handling bags of powder and swabbing out sooty cannon, not bathing in the Elbe!

thanks for your comment, "too clean" is exactly what I search to do when I paint figures, I only try to have attractive looking armies
after all it's only 15mm

my 28mm are painted very differently, using the foundry triads, still not realistic but I hope they are not too badly painted;

I hope I'll be faster on the next batch, 6 regiment of line infantry and 1 light infantry regiment because I need them for the IWC 2013 in Belgium;

This post actually answers, to some extent, a question I had posted yeterday, about what people are typically using in French divisions. I had asked about the earlier period though, 1808-1802.

So it's two units of infantry, each four bases, two guns, a division commander with two models on it, and two single figure ADCs?

Are all the caissons and limbered guns necessary?

The rules call for 1 caisson per unit, so you can get by with a small number of them, and they are not necessary as you can also show limbered by lining up your arty units in a column. Takes about the same space as the caisson base but does not look quite as good.

Everyone will have a different idea of what best to field in a Division.

However, if I was putting together a 'generic' French infantry division pack, I would include:

2 x small line units (48 figures if 18mm, 64 if 'true' 15mm).
1 x small light unit (24 figures if 18mm, 28 if 15mm)
1 x small field artillery (2 gun models, 6 crew, 1 limber and perhaps an extra gun model to hang behind the limber)
1 x Divisional Commander (2 mounted figures)
1 or 2 mounted ADC figures.
- and perhaps also 4-6 dead guys to use as casualty markers.

With 18mm figures, 6 per base looks best (IMO), if smaller 15mm figures then probably 8 per base.

The LI unit has 2 rear bases formed up (6 or 8 figures on each) and 2 front bases in skirmish mode (3 figures on each), plus an aditional spare 2 skirmishing bases for deploying the unit in skirmish formation (or to use as skirmish attachments for the infantry units).

Having 2 mounted officers allows an option of basing 1 of them as a Brigade Commander if desired. The spare artillery model looks cool hung behind the limber, or alternatively can be used to make the artillery unit large, or for an artillery attachment for the infantry.

All good advice - and a far more useful than this post of mine. -But I can't resist carping that while what looks best is entirely a matter of opinion, giving each file of 18mm infantry a width scale width of at least a meter is in terms of history, wrong by a long chalk. Of course, if figures are in wild poses, needs must but figures deployed touching elbows will usually fit easily within the space allowed by these rules. I'd be tempted to put them in two ranks of five.
All pedantic carping though in the context of this thread.
