Questions about 6.00

Hello, this is Chris Johnston, from the Gulf Coast region of the USA (redneck country - just ask Tim Porter). Anyway, I have been most fortunate to have received a copy of the beta test version 6.00 (thank you JD) and I have a few questions about the rules:
Stepping Forward:
Page 26 - 4th bullet states that a "BG cannot separate to form multiple groups of bases. There must be at least corner to corner contact throughout". When I play-tested, I could easily maintain side edge to side edge contact with the files stepping forward, but could not always maintain corner to corner contact. What am I missing? (In the conforming enemy in contact section page 34 - 3rd bullet, it allows either side edge or corner contact).
Shooting:
Page 39 "Ranges" - There is no maximum range for javelins and firearms (only effective ranges) yet in the "shooting dice"chart, (page 44) for LF (presumably with javelins) and any troops with firearms, you must roll 1 dice per three bases "outside effective range"... which implies that they can shoot beyond their effective range. If that is the case, what then is the maximum range for javelins and firearms?
Thank you so much for your help.
Best regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
First this really should be on the beta forum (send a message to JDM using the private messages and get him to add you to the beta forum), I will answer as best as I can anyway.
Stepping Forward:
Page 26 - 4th bullet states that a "BG cannot separate to form multiple groups of bases. There must be at least corner to corner contact throughout". A file can step forwards it's full base depth(s) so three bases of heavy can step forwards 45mm leaving their rear corner touching the front corner of the adjacent file i.e. at least in corner to corner contact. Edge contact is fine, this is not a DBM group.
You are right, there is no maximum range, only effective range. Troops armed with slings, javelins and hand guns can only shoot at effective range but do so at effective range power. I think you are readong something extra into the tables. Troops armed with bow or crossbow can shoot beyond effective range up to their maximum range but with no maximum range you simply can't shoot further than effective.
I hope that makes sense, I think I have ended up saying the same thing twice.
Hammy

The key phrase is "at least". The
minimum contact permitted is corner to corner - they don't
have to be in corner to corner contact.

It is only worded this way because they are in the same section as LF with bows/crossbows, who do have maximum ranges. Javelins and firearms can only shoot when in effective range, so always get 1 per 2 bases.

Thank you...that clears up both questions nicely.
