Sub commander better than CinC

Can you have yuor CinC as a Troop Commander and a sub commander as a Field Commander?

Yep, people often do so they can have a better chance with a flank march

Alexander started out as a sub general. In medieval armies, the King was often the CinC but hopeless as a general. The real generals were mere subbies.
