Firing, Dice allocation and target

So I am wondering about firing at multiple units at multiple ranges.

Z is infantry shooting and its has A at close range and B at Medium range.

AABB
AA

_ZZ_
_ZZ_

p 48 last sentence.
...against permitted target only.

p 51 1st bullet
this is why this example is infantry firing as it is clear artillery always fires at closet range band.
p 51 2nd bullet
"a unit must allocate maximum dice at a close range target before any are allocated to a medium range target."

1) I presume this 2nd bullet just is added into the math of how you allocate dice. Meaning maximum within constraints and not maximum (all) ignoring constraints.

But....

p 52 bullets refer to range band implying that all the dice are allocated at targets within the range band you are firing in. Close range band in this example.
2) So in the above example B cannot be fired upon as all of Z's dice must fire in the close range band.

In your example ALL of the dice must fire at the closest target - in fact small units can NEVER fire at a target at close range AND a target at medium range, since all of its dice are available to fire at the closest enemy.
The only time that you MAY be able to fire at targets at 2 ranges is if it is a large unit and the closest target is only to the front of one end base.

• Artillery will always direct all their fire at targets within the closest range band.
• A unit must allocate maximum dice at a close range target before any are allocated to a medium range target.
These 2 could have been combined into:
• A unit must allocate maximum dice at targets within the closest range band.
For a large unit this will leave only 1/3 dice (rounded down) to fire at a medium range target where the close range target is to the front of only one of its bases. It may have been a lot easier to just ignore targets at all but the closest range band, but the 1 or 2 dice could make a difference, particularly during your opponents move.
