Brigade Commander Bases

I'm sure the official answer is "whatever works for you", but I might wrong about that or it might be worthwhile getting some views on basing brigade commanders.

As I understand it, Corps and Divisional commanders are, according to page 90, "the only bases in your army that are independent" and should be based in a way that makes them recognizable. Recommended base sizes are 60mmX60mm / 40mmX40mm / 30mmX30mm for 20-28mm / 12-18mm / 5-10mm.

However, the extra "attached" brigade commanders should be on a standard base size i.e., 60mmX45mm / 40mmX30mm / 30mmX20mm for the respective figurine scales.

Also, in terms of figures on the base, one option, which I'm already using, is 3 figures for a Corps commander and 2 for a division commander, but what about "brigade commanders". I had been thinking just a single figure but another option might be to have a mounted general in the midst of some appropriate troops (infantry or cavalry).

Anyway I had been worried that all my brigade general figures were useless, but between ADC for command points and brigade commander attachments I might actually be short of generals.

Yes there do seem to be a large number of Generals needed you missed out the LOC bases that requires filling with some fine officer types,

I might decide to order something like a forge vignette for the LOC instead of officers. I know those are available in 25-28 mm, but I'll have to look around for what's available in 15-18mm.

As for a large number of generals...as an example for my French/French Allies I have 1 "army base" that could be used as an LOC base, 5 corps commander bases, 17 division commanders and 39 brigade commanders. If I can't make do with this, I'm in deep, deep need of counseling but there will be a question of how many brigade commanders become ADC markers and how many get "promoted" to full "attached Brigade commander bases".

On the Allied side it's a little different as only have an Austrian "army base" that could serve as an LOC base. So, temporarily I might be using this for other allied nations.

To fill in the command bases I plan to use some REALLY OLD figures.......

That's what veterans and grognards are for!

Hi,

I have been rebasing my generals and you are right - you need quite a few of them. Particularly if you include ADC figures. But this is great as I have many generals collected over the years which under previous rules never saw the battlefield at the same time. Makes the table look great.

Cheers,
John Shaw

So far I have been basing on 60mm Dia and 40 dia round bases with 3 and 2 figs respectively. There are plenty of command figures in 28mm and for my Austrians I suspect a few of the mounted offices in the Victrix packs will end up as ADCs.

I have my generals on 40 x 40 mm and have based 4 Divisional commanders and a corps commander.

Here is my LOC next to my Corps commander.

Divisional commander leading his Division

For ADCs I have mounted a single cavalry figure on a two pence piece (sorry no pictures)

Each generals batch of ADCs are mounted on the same coloured horses.

Hope this helps

After this week's budget you'll be lucky to have the 2p to base them on :)

Quite nice stuff, Don.

For brigade commanders I will likely go with basing a brigade commander with some rank and file figures, which means I'll have to do separate line infantry, guard and cavalry brigade commanders, but that doesn't seem too daunting since there usual seems about 1 brigade commander per division.

Forgot to say, that in all the play testing I did I never had need of an officer attachment.

This may only apply to Prussians as all their Divisions are allowed to be mixed.

Some of the other players in our club used them with a unit of cavalry so they could detach them from a cavalry Division and operate on the other flank.

I don't think I'll be sending in Pics. of my figures. They're 15mm strip miniature figurines, although they're passable, perhaps, at about 4ft.

Those Spanish look good.

Best regards

Mike

I don't expect I would need a lot...but just a few for mixed divisions (as you mentioned), historical scenarios where warranted and perhaps to bolster a Corps with a lot of poor troops.
