VMD required when charge target evades ?

This came up in a game last night. I have always played it one way, but my opponent disagreed.

I charged a BG of LF with my HF. The LF evaded. Behind the LF, and within normal charge reach of my HF, are an enemy BG of MF. If the LF had stood to receive the charge, I would not have contacted the MF. Does my HF automatically hit the enemy MF (which I say it does as not all of its charge targets have evaded) or does it roll a VMD (as my opponent says it must because its original charge target evaded).

No VMD is required/permitted. The MF are a valid target within your normal charge range. The HF MUST charge into the MF. As you say, the HF do not VMD because not all of their targets have evaded.

The MF become a target of the charge as soon as the LF evade, so all targets have not evaded so no VMD.
