How to keep formations in place?

Very new player who wants to like this game, it cover with the same system a very nice range of eras.
My issue is with heavy infantry, Roman legionnaires in one battle, suffering from a burst of excess enthusiasm and charging off after a routing opponent. I can go along with them advancing one hex as part of the attack, but to advance more than that is just to make it easy for their enemy to surround them on three sides and destroy them. There is no way I can imagine a group of trained infantry lead by the notoriously hard-bitten Roman NCOs charging out to their destruction. Just as it was important not to break the line by routing, so was it important not to break the line by running off forward like a bunch of recruits.
Surely there must be something I'm doing wrong or some value in the appropriate .xml file that needs to be adjusted.
Any advise would be appreciated.
