What's the difference between the two branches of the 1940 DLC campaign?

I believe the British one is supposed to be the easier of the two branches. Just be careful in it at Arras is all I can say.

Choosing to fight the British will lead you to Maubeuge, Arras and Calais, fighting the French will get you Stonne, Wassigny and Amiens. Then you continue on the same path whatever you choose to fight.
As to harder or easier, it might depend on your core composition a bit, in Arras you have to fight (off) a significant force of British armor, as for Wassigny, if you have never played that scenario before, pay really close attention to the briefing and expect the unexpected.
If this is your first play through of the DLC then I would advice you to go with the British branch as it's a bit more conventional.

Thanks for the input
I played the British branch the last time, so I'll go French this time. The smaller map on the first scenario closed the deal :-p
