Table Size?

Lance and I played another game last night.
My Maccabean HF sat on the base line whilst I slowed the Selucid advance with LF. This gave my MF time to work their way around the flanks through the terrain.
What it demonstrated was the difficulty HF have in getting into meaningful contact with an opponent who is trying to delay / avoid them.
I guess it may be a question more for competition organisers but in the Roman / Hellenistic Period it might be more appropriate to play on 3' wide tables? 4' wide isn't an issue in later periods with predominantly cavalry armies but any HF army may be at a disadvantage on a 4' wide table.
I'll be using Germans next week so I'll let you know how we get on.
