Paired games

After a prolonged absence I've set up a few games to entertain me in the evenings after work.
I was wondering though, when setting up scenarios one can choose your side... I presume a 'paired game' is 2 vs AI or is it 2 vs 2? And how are forces distributed for this?

Paired games are for example: In a Cannae scenario if you pcik a paired game, it will actually mean taht you will play two games against a particular opponent. Meaning once you will be the Carthaginian vs the Romans, in the second one your opponent will be the Carthaginian, you will be Romans.
Paired games are a cool way of dealing with scenarios that you think are not entirely balanced.
