Is there a kind of core force in CC?
How does the promotion work?
Does it work with Windows7?
What resolution does it offer?
I heard there should be good news on CC soon - please include core units

1. All forces in CC are core, there're no aux units. Core force like in PG exists in CC3.
2. I don't know of any promotions in CC games.
3. Don't know.
4. Works well in 1680x1050 for me.

Close Combat: Cross of Iron is based on CC3. There you can upgrade units, recoup losses, rest units from fighting, etc. CoI is the only CC re-release which has static campaign though.

Last Stand Arnhem is CC2 (my favourite), Cross of Iron is CC3, Wacht Am Rhein is CC4 and The Longest Day is CC5.

Damn, you've never played CC?! Lucky you. So much wonderful moments ahead...
In all CC except for CC3 you have a bunch of battalion battlegroups on a strategic map. You can change their composition, refill losses, etc. You move this BGs on strategic map; when they meet with enemy BGs, combat occurs; in combat you command lead element of BG (roughly a company).
In CC3 there're no strategic map, you fight through a semi-static campaign with your core force (from platoon- up to company+); you can upgrade your units, 'buy' new ones, etc.

Any tipps for a good core force or force mixture?
Any good mods for the CC series - just bought all of them look really nice
Should I rather get elite units or rather low quality units or a mixture of them - what is the best mixture?

That's a matter of personal preference; I'm an infantry centered player so I mostly use it with 2 units of AT and 2-3 units of armor -- choice is map-dependent though.

Nope, I prefer vanilla games, but
http://www.closecombatseries.net and
http://www.closecombat.org should have a wide selection of mods along with discussion forums.

'Play Game' from the main menu, and then you'll see a drop-out menu near the top of the screen -- there you can choose 'Saved Games' string. That's according to my memory, so if I'm wrong -- check the manual, such kind of info should be there.

AT guns and very careful advance are your friends.

Toughest battle of the campaign for Germany, in my opinion. At that stage, the tanks you've got are way undergunned against the heavy Soviet armor, and there are large open stretches between the buildings that make it difficult to advance with infantry. I was able to eke out a marginal win in the original game, but it wasn't pretty: one of my 4 tanks brewed up and a second heavily damaged, plus a lot of shot-up infantry. If I recall, the SU may deploy either a wave of lighter tanks or a handful of heavier ones, so rerunning the scenario may give you a better shot at it.
