Well, it looks like our family holiday will be in Tunisia, less than an hours drive from the ruins of Carthage. Seeing that Hannibal and Carthage is one of my favourite bits of history then visiting some historical sites is a must.

Anyone been there an done any of the historical sites, museums, etc?

Anything you'd recommend visiting or avoiding?

We had a very good holiday there a couple of Christmases ago with “Explore”. Highlights I would suggest visiting

1. The Roman amphitheatre at El Jem
2. The city of Sfax which has some really impressive medieval Islamic fortifications
3. The town of Le Kef where the “Truceless War” between the Carthaginians and their unpaid mercenaries started at the end of the First Punic War. A impressive Turkish style fort with the really good “Restaurant Venus” doing very good fish & Lamb Dishes.
4. Also don’t miss the underground roman housing at Bulla Regia

Re wine wise look out for Veux Magon. And bear in mind that the international airport outside Tunis is supposed to be on the site of the battle of Zama.

First off, I'm so envious of all you Europeans and your proximity to the great locations of antiquity.

I gather the Great Harbor has been at least partially excavated. Might be worth a look as might any temples to Ba'al.

Uttica might be interesting too, if for no other reason than the beaches there.

Or, if you have time, you might nip over to Tripoli to see the most recent lost empire.

Their is a great view of the harbors in Google Earth, and that is probably the closest I'll come to seeing the real thing...
