Hi,

Here's my first FoG scenario. My intention is to design scenarios depicting battles in Scandinavia during the medieval period (about 1000-1500) and some Viking scenarios as "Wolves from the Sea" is released.

The scenario is designed for multiplayer and has been play tested in a mirror game with help of hidde, but it would be great if more could play and send me feedback.


Historical background:
The ruler of Sweden in 1388 was king Albrekt av Mecklenburg. But he was an unpopular king among the Swedish nobles, who instead elected Queen Margareta, ruler of Denmark and Norway, as ruler of Sweden. This led to a civil war between King Albrekt and Queen Margareta.
On 24 February 1389, a combined Swedish-Danish force led by Henrik Parow, met King Albrekt's force of German mercenaries at the village of Åsle, some miles east of Falköping. In the battle King Albrekt was captured and remained a prisoner until 1395.

Designers note:
There's not much information in the historical records about the battle. Therefore the composition of the forces is a guess. What is know is that Margareta's force would consist of about 1500 men and King Albrekt's of about 1000 men.
Still today, local stories tells of ghosts that can be seen walking the fields of the battle (thanks hidde for this information).

Interesting scenario, mostly becayse of the very rough terrain.

The large amounts of swamps and the stream running through the middle really managed to channel the fighting. In the end both sides reached their side of the river, but both decided not to try to cross it as the cross-river attack was seen as too risky. Both sides ended up shooting at each other. Everyone was able to manouver ther fragmented units out of ennemy range, so the battle ended with a draw.

Another playthrough had us pretty much in the same place - both sides along the river, but then the Margareta side made better use of their light infantry bowmen and manged to keep one ennemy unit fragmented till turn 20, which won the scenario.

Thanks for playing the scenario and your report! When I designed the scenario I was a bit worried that the river/stream and all the swamp would prevent both sides from attacking each other, but there are more ground to fight on and as I've set the length of the scenario to 21 turns there are plenty of time for manoeuvring. The swamp in particular is important to the scenario in an historical context as this was why King Albrekt was defeated as his cavalry rode into soft ground and was stuck.

A very interesting scenario with very tough deployment issues to sort out for both armies (too tough for me, in fact ).

The history is also very interesting because if we take as our two fixed points in time - i) the classic Viking armies of the 9th-11th centuries and ii) the representation of a Late Medieval Swedish army in the DAG (later 15thC) - then the question is how did the Swedish armies develop between, say, 1100AD and 1450AD? Things to think about include to what extent did European influences (particularly German) start to alter the traditional Scandinavian way of fighting by the time battles like Asle took place? And were there regional variations in military developments (e.g.between north and south) in Scandinavia.
