Have you played the new game Unity of Command?

Since it is a fellow Matrix game, I am sure I can get away with recommending a new game I just tried out over the last week - Unity of Command. http://unityofcommand.net/
  • Clean, elegant and intuitive interface
One of the best AIs out there
Great supply and ZOC rules - really feeling like blitzkreig warfare
Much less unit choice and personalisation than PC - more of a simple game with great depth.
I see it not as an alternative but as a complement to Panzer Corps - do you prefer strawberry or vanilla ice cream?

Only the Stalingrad campaign so far, but I am sure this will grow.

Yes its a cool game, and some very tough scenario's that you have to have a few goes at before you can etch out a win (and some i can't beat).

If only the graphics would look more appealing ....

Yup, saw some screenshots and the comic look just does not appeal to me.

I heard lots of good things about it!

But there is no demo and the units (the busts representing Infantry in particular) look crude.

Panzer Corps might not be the most spectacular game graphics wise, but it is pretty nevertheless. Just like the sprites of Panzer General I/II could still be used today unlike those of the later 3D abominations of the series.

The units look quite okay, except for the Infantry unit faces and the terrain.
That's a pity as it will limit potential customers to diehard wargamers, who actually would deserve better graphics as well.

Yes, the look of the units put me off initially.....fortunately the good reviews persuaded me to buy the game in any case, and now I quite like them!

They are a smallish indie developer, so their initial focus was getting a solid game out - bug free for me so far......there may be a demo coming......

I had the secret hope of a display-mod making PC look as PG1, but I didn't dare to propse it since I thought the developers will ban me forever.

Why would we want to ban you for this? :)

It looks like an interesting "micro" aspect on PzC, but I am more interested in the "macro" aspect in the upcoming World of Flames (also a Matrix product).

After all, if you are going to have a "World War" II game, shouldn't it cover the world? :)

Since you spend so much time making it look modern and somebody turns up wishing it would be 2d with the sprites being tiny. (I just don't like units bigge rthan hexes, but again, that's just oldfashioned me.)

Well, I know that there are people who would like to see PzC in PG classic look, so I don't see a problem if anyone makes such a mod. It should be perfectly feasible technically.

I've bought it on the last weekend, but I had not time, yet, to really start playing it.
While I don't fancy much some of the graphics, the gameplay seems to be good.

I dont own as I have never really liked pure operational level games, however there is already a graphics mod up at Matrix for Nato counters vs "heads"

I don't know about you guys, but if a game is really well-designed and challenging, I can almost lose track of the graphics.

Don't get me wrong, I like cool graphics too, but have you ever played a game that was just so much fun that you didn't even notice after a while that the graphics were terrible?

Yes of course. That's why I still bought it. Graphics, while important, are just a part of the whole. A usually favour gameplay.
It's not that the graphics look bad. Only it's not my style. And maybe after starting really playing, I'll end up liking.

Just a quick question Mr Kerensky....

Is that shot from the Village battle scene from Saving Private Ryan,by chance?

If not what movie is it from?

Not everybody might like their style, which is fine, but to claim that it's ugly is just not fair towards this small team (2), because it's a well polished design which is very refreshing when you still have to deal with monstrosities(!) like these that continue to scare away lots of potential newcomers to this genre year in, year out:
