Back due to unpopular demand
Green is a BG of Disrupted cavalry
A is a BG of steady Elite Triari
B is a BG Hastati
C is a BG of triari
All red face up page, A and B are in melee with Green. There is less than 1 MU between Green and C
In the melee A takes 3 hits and loses a base, but passes cohesion. Green takes 4 hits, does not lose a base but becomes fragmented
What happens at the end of the melee phase and then during the JAP.

No-one has broken in the melee phase, so nothing happens in particular them.
In JAP:
Green is facing steady foot so must break off. The break off is blocked within 1MU so instead green drops to broken.
Green routs, adjusting to avoid C.
A and B pursue, unless they wish to try a CMT not to.
Then A is removed as down to 1 base. If C and/or B are within 3MU they will need to test at this point.
All the above unless we're playing in the US, in which case the umpire will decide what they think the umpires meant the rules to read

Assuming I'm the Roman player:
What JAP?
There wouldn't BE a JAP.
I'd get that result and say 'this game sucks' and never play again.

You lose 32 pts (ish) the enemy loses 52 points (ish) and it sucks?

This is a good saturnalia quiz.
But to drive home the point you should have an option B where the elite triari are elephants.
These would help people remember taht what they are commonly used to playing one way is slightly different if the 2 bases are elite/superior and not average.

Or poor/average triari.

A and B pursue, unless they wish to try a CMT not to.
And, if A and B both pursue, which one is moved first?

The faster one, if the same players choice

The faster one
OK, so let's say that A chose to lose the base on the left and that both A and B pursue. B rolls a 6 and A rolls 5 for the VMD so B is moving 5 MUs and moves first. If I read the rules correctly, B may drop bases to avoid friends. So B wheels and drops 2 bases into a column to miss friends C and ends up in front of A. Now it is A's turn to pursue but B is in the way. A isn't allowed to shift and doesn't have enough room to wheel to avoid B. So does it just move up until it runs into B and then stops?

Yes, it goes as far as it can then stops if it can't get past

I'm confused. Why is green breaking off when A auto broke due to casualties.

The elite triari did not autobreak, which was the point of the Q. It is removed at the end of the JAP due to being only 1 base left, it had not lost enough % bases to autobreak.

A auto broke due to casualities but is still "Steady" until the end of the JAP.
A common mistake is to break them immediately on the death roll.
I think that was the point of this example.

Yep people are often use to an Elephant autobreak. Which is >40% when one base is lost. So the elephant breaks immediately.
But the sneaky phil, I mean triarii are elite. So 1 base left does not "autobreak" howver the unit still evaporates at the end of the JAP phase.

Phil,
The most important question though is can the Triari form Orb?
