'39 DLC: Can SE Infantry be upgraded to Pioniere Units...

...in the later DLC's ('40 and '41)?

I have two SE Gerbigsjager units at the moment, but I favor using Pionieres almost exclusively. However, so far all I see is that I can upgrade them to Grenadiers or standard Infantry.

The reason that I'm asking is because I'm about to start the '40 DLC, and need to make a decision to either keep them, or sell them off to finance some new Pionieres. I'll take the experience hit now, but don't want to wait too long before I have my new guys up to par with their own experience.

No, there is no corresponding SE unit.
I use only Pioniere as INF and 1 Fallschirmjäger, so I have the same problem. Usually I just reload if I get an SE INF, because I had the problem in the vanilla campaign as well, for ~15 scenarios, ok, but for ~70 no.
Of course you can just alter the equipment file, be sure to have a backup for multiplayer.

Btw, I do not mind the experience hit too much, especially if it is so early. But you also lose all those kills, and thats a problem (because heros depend on kills). My infantry units have on average more than 200 kills accumulated after GC39 and that really helps to get heros.

Thanks for the answer.

I'm inclined to replay the '39 DLC altogether now, as it fundamentally changes my strategy. I know that selling off the SE Infantry deprives me of extra units to deploy, and I don't mind that at all; my other units will pick up the slack in the "kills" department.

Playing the campaign in the Main (non DLC) campaign, I only kept the SE units if they were tank units; otherwise, I sold them off immediately. I knew that I'd be able to upgrade them later in the war. I'd much rather take the short-term early hit in the number of deployable units to have a substantially more powerful force later in the game, when I'm inclined to believe that I'm going to need it.

On my current campaign, GC39-GC41 with elite reinforcements, upgraded a SE Gebirsjager to SE Grenadier. The unit has a +3 Defense Hero. Its just beautiful.

Kind of following on from the above, and sorry if its been answered else where, but is it possible to get SE tank units in the 39 DLC?

No SE tanks until Norway. And the SE PzIV is much later available than the normal PzIV.

Thanks...however that brings up my next question...which I should have posted above

If I am allowed 1 or 2 SE units in 39 and 3 or 4 SE units in 40....can I wait until I start playing 40 then get all 4 SE tank units?

You would have to get very lucky to get 4 SE tanks because they are only awarded randomly. The other thing is, there is a limit set as to how many SE units can be awarded in total - I think it's 3.

Like the core size steadily increases over the course of the DLC, so does the SE limit.
It's a limit of 2, 3, 4, and 5 SE units for DLC 39,40,41, and 42 so far.

I'm already re-playing the '39 Campaign at the moment, with a different philosophy on the SE Infantry.

Knowing that they're essentially an evolutionary dead-end for my purposes (which is to have an Infantry core composed solely of Pionieres and one Bridging unit), I'm keeping whatever I get until I get to Warsaw.

Then one of the two available SE Infantry units is getting sold off during the deployment phase, to both get the Prestige for selling it during the Upgrade/Deployment phase before the battle, and to give me a shot at getting an SE Tank for the Norway scenarios.

I won't bother upgrading them, and they won't get any Elite Reinforcements. I'll keep them alive, but not much more than that.

Discipline is harsh in the Wehrmacht.

I have SE Grenadiers and an infantry who can take a city with less hits than my overstrength pioneers can. They pretty much roll anything in front of them, and often they clear the city with no return hits back. I like the SE infantry as much as the tanks, my SE infantry has been with me since Poland and I have grown attached to them to the point that I will not even upgrade them to grenadier I would miss them if I did.

I really like to have either Pioniere or Fallschirmjager as infantry and neither is available as SE unit so I made my own. Same stats as the normal versions except for +1 to initiave for the Pioniere and +1 to ammo for the Fallschirmjager. Gave them both the icon of the SE Grenadier.

Was really happy when I was awarded one of 'my' SE Pioniere.

With the modifications I made I don't think I upset the balance in the game, but I am a bit curious if there is a specific reason for not having these units as SE available.
Apart from what I guess that historically such units did not really exist and that the Pioniere and Fallschirmjager can already be considerd as SE units.

As i posted somewhere else there were actually "SE" paratroopers. So that should be an option for PzC in the future :?:

And maybe we get SE pioneers as a gift for christmas ?

Comment : SE Pioneers weren't historical, but there were "SE" sabotage troops (which might be a sufficent base) :P

Yup, die Brandenburger, but they were only a regiment at first, and only a small part were actualy used as paratroopers. Later there were some SS para units - IIRC it were those you freed Musolini.
