As I have seen the results of all (well all but one) of the BHGS recognised FoGR competitions held in the UK (as I do the rankings) I thought I would give a brief summary of the UK FoGR competitions in the first year since the rules were released.

Other than the very first set of rankings (which only included Rollcall 2010), Alasdair Harley has been the No.1 ranked player in the UK (think how good he could be if he learnt to use foot troops as well...)

Alasdair has won 7 of the 10 competitions that he entered including the two 'Majors' (BHGS Chall, and Britcon), plus one where he did not count his win as he was also the umpire. (If anyone wants a crack at Alasdair, Rollcall seems to be the place as he has participated in both and won neither.)

The other winners were:

Ben Jones (Rollcall 2010, Rampage - no Alasdair, and Campaign ECW Period - no Alasdiar)
Richard Bodley Scott (Rollcall 2011)
Steve Hammond (Campaign Italian Wars Period - no Alasdair)
Don McHugh (Attack, Farnborough - big boys toys)

Richard Love (Oxford Battleday - Alasdair was Umpire)

The largest competition in terms of number of players was Godendogdigdagdoggod (or whatever it is called) with 32, followed by Britcon and Warfare 2011 with 26 each.

Britcon had the largest number of games (it is a 6 round marathon) with 73 games.

FoGR seems to be growing in popularity in the UK (and it seems the US as well where players of the calibre of Iverson and Hazelwood have made their mark). I don't know how it is doing elsewhere as I don't have any information.

While comparisons between countries are always difficult, given that players such as Pete Dalby (multiple world champion under different rule sets) have not been able to unseat Alasdair, I suspect that Alasdair will remain the closest thing we have to a World Champion, at least for a while yet (well until Shane Drummond or Oliver D decide to take up FoGR anyway...)

So here is the $ 64,000 question, when & where will the 2012 world championships be held ?

I heard Britcon a long time ago, but nothing seems to be happenening about it as far as I can see. Would like to know so we can plan holidays etc to coincide with the event.

No date posted yet - I think that they are waiting to find a weekend that Pete Dalby can't make before they confirm the booking...

I am not part of the BHGS politburo so am not privy to any discussions underway.

When the date is announced I would expect it to be first posted on the BHGS website http://www.bhgs.co.uk/

I can add an Italian review, Matteo may also like to comment if he's not to busy changing nappies :

We've had one "official"(*) FoGR meeting here, it was in Roma in February. Also it was one of the periods at the Faenza team competition in May - Faenza might be regarded as the centre for FoGR (it's where Testudo is from). Given we'll only have 7 FoG meetings in total this year (one still to go in Roma), it's not bad. (There may also have been a one-day meeting, can't remember).

The next will probably be at the Italian "Nationals" end of March. It'll be two one-day, 3 game, 650AP competitions running concurrently with the same for FoGAM so players can "pick-and-mix" - the other periods like Impetus, FoW, Napoleonics, are also one day competitions, so same idea. Periods Europe to 1589AD and 1590-1660AD - the FoGM will be late medieval on the opposite day to early FoGR, so one could use approximately the same figures in both. Then there should be Faenza again, and hopefully at least one more FoGR competition.

Given the small size of the hobby here overall, not just FoG or other rules, not too bad.

(*) meaning it counts for the national championships - we count all FoG meetings towards it, given many players play both.

Doubles events may be another way.

Tim & partner very kindly beat Alasdair & Paddy in the first round at Devizes and then left their flank march off table for the whole game when we played.

Can't make Farnborough this year, but will be at Simbridge in a couple of weeks.

Clevedon club are plaining a 25mm competition for next year.

Tim very kindly did this when playing me at Britcon but despite my 5:1 on table superiority in mounted, although that one BG lost a general, went fragged, and down to 2 bases, that one BG was enough to defeat me on it's own...

In Italy we are playing but majority of competitions are still with FOAM, ita interesting that the Team Nationals are organized with 1 ancient, 1 medieval and 1 reinnassance player for each team.

I was second in High Wyton (lost only with Alasdair) and I'm in the second half of the italian ranking.
Carmelo Lo Moro was second in Brussels and he's 2nd - 3rd in the Italian ranking.
Last tournemant was won by Massimiliano Martellacci (at his 1th FOGR) with 92 pt in 4 match.

HIMO Massimiliano and Carmelo can be among the best player, I hope we'll se at Britcom 2012.

Some data for comparison:
an Italian was 6th, a French was 12th and a travelling Australian was 13th.
Next time we'll apponit Alasdair as next winner He will be allowded to touch wood (I suggest not a Sudanese Woodland )

My track record for predictions this time was about as good as the Olympics' donkey...

Do you have the armies used by those players in the events you hve results for.

Am I in "those" ? I've used Ottomans last Italian national Team competition and Later Polish and ECW Parlamentarian in the previous tournemant. Always in the second half of the classify
