Defended artillery?

In some of the games the European guns were lost when contacted by enemy cavalry, yet when you played the Ming, Hussars contacted Ming Rockets who stayed and fought. Were they defended? The pictures make it look like they were undefended.

I think that's me getting the rules wrong... or adding too much poetic license to the report

They are captured immediately, but I needed to hit them with the Hussars to make sure they were captured,as the dragoons might not have made the charge due to being DISR.

Although Dragoons are light troops, all light troops can charge Artillery without a test if the artillery has no rear support, so the Poles were overkill!

Hi - I'm the Ming player in question. As you say artillery are captured instantly when contacted if they are undefended - and that's how we played it. By the way I left my artillery unsupported in most games - I found it was easier to recapture than defend (in one game I recaptured three artillery BGs which I think demoralised my opponent in that game, every success seeming to come to nothing!). In this game Tim felt it was so important to capture the (rather boldly advanced)artillery in that turn (before my other troops got in position) that he wasn't prepared to risk using the dragoons alone (who might have failed their CMT to charge because they were disrupted, see page 83 of the rules)

hope that helps (and apologies for the outbreak of brackets)

Mounted troops except Dragoons do not capture artillery IIRC.

Jim is right. If unsupported artillery are hit by mounted, they are "lost" to the owning player but still sit on the table as "neutral observers"! However when hit by Dragoons (or any shot), they are "captured" and can be used by the that side to fire on their former owners albeit at a "-1 POA" . If needed they can also do a 180 degree turn if they pass a complex move test.

I think - looking back - that's what happened. the Dragoons moved up in the movement phase, and then got shot anyway down to fragged by the artillery behind. It took most of the rest of the game to turn the captured artillery as they kept failing the CMT. They were eventually recaptured by LF with bows...

However, only Pike and Shot can fully rehabilitate your lost guns. Your bow can take them back for atrittion purposes, but they cannot man your guns/rockets.

Right - but captured or recaptured guns shoot really badly anyway (Poor and -1 POA if I remember correctly). The important thing is that the Victory Points (or Break points, or whatever they are called) are transfered at the moment of capture or recapture. So you can be broken by losing artillery even if they are contacted by mounted - and you can climb back from the brink of being broken by recapturing your own guns (much to your opponent's annoyance!). That wasn't the concern for Tim - it was more that he wanted to take the guns before I arrived in force so that he could reorganise his line to fight me - a turn later and he might have had to chose between taking the guns and preparing for the next fight.
