Most 4-game, 2-Day competitions means a hotel or B&B and TBH that puts them way out of my reach.

Times are tough for a lot of people and a I would expect a comp that didn't need an overnight stay would be well attended. Despite this, as far as I know, there is only one 3-game, 1 day comp (at Farnborough this coming weekend as it happens) in central/southern England.

Is there any chance that more might be arranged in the course of 2012 ?

Yes, but the key problem is in the word Northern ....

A 4 hour drive each way doesn't really make any saving on a hotel does it ?

Well, from 'West London' there are various 2 day events that are doable daily, and there is also Ascot which is not that pricey. Otherwise, book early enough and you can get 9/19 at travellodge/premier inn.

Bash, Farnborough
You could also ask Madaxeman if central london is in your range

You might also want to look at buying rail tickets early as they can be much cheaper bought well in advance - I know, I recently didn't buy a ticket for £12 because I wasn't sure of the date, three weeks later it cost £40.

In the states a lot of our events "grew up" from someone organizing a 1 day event for 2 or three rounds. So start it and find a tiny venue and limit it to say 12 gamers. Get your critical mass going.

You can even consider a two round event with later start and earlier end times so it is easier for people to travel to and fro. This can all be tests with lower downside.

But start small and hold expectations low. Then you will ahve a wonderful manageable event.

I think there is plenty of mileage in the one day or two consecutive one day event format.

While for some a full weekend is more expensive for those who have to travel a long way two days is better.

As far as I can see there is no reason why the Pick'n'Mix format should not be expanded to more venues. I am already considering running one in Stafford sometime.

The if you want it organise it approach is a very good one though and should anyone want to do so I am sure that there are plenty of people myself included who would happily help.

The Pick'n'Mix format is great last year I could only play on the one day, so turn up and played, if the event was a two day tournament I would not have been able to play, and therefore miss out and a great day, it does help that Hammy is a great wargaming host

And just for completeness (if outside your area), there is another series of one day competitions in Scotland - Scottish League.
