About randomness of combat

Probably been discussed before
But forum search showed no results.
So let's say a single unit attacks another single unit.
From my observation it seams that results can varify from something
like a +5 win up to a -5 loss (not counting in terrain modifiers).
My impression is that the above mentioned span of results is far too great
So i'd like to propose more predictable results with a divergence of at best +/-2.
What's your POV ?
Maybe the "powers that be" could share some info on this subject ?
TIA
