Looters shooting

In a game last night, I captured a camp with a line of dragoons by the usual move to contact in the movement phase. One ( and part of another )base was clear of the camp, and I wished to shoot at a column of my opponents cavalry within close range (sweatily close range, but a camp is hard to resist). My opponent objected under the "it does not say you can" argument, whereas I counter-quoted with the "no combat has taken place " section of looting camps. Opinions and rulings from on high are welcome.

Don't have my rules here and I may be confusing the Ancients. But I think somewhere it specifies you can't shoot but you can be shot. Maybe the FAQ.
But my recollection is there is something specific somewhere.

Page 110 - a BG can be shot at if attacking a camp, but not if looting it.
I can't find a reference to wheher a BG in contact with a camp can shoot - but it seems reasonable that if it can be shot at then bases not in contact with the camp could shoot.
But I'm very much a newbie to 'R'.

A battlegroup cannot be shot at if looting a camp, only if it is attacking it. Only fortified camps can be attacked, as any move into unfortified camps loots them during the movement phase. If the bases which protrude can be attacked in melee and can defend themselves, then it does not strike me as unreasonable that they should also be able to shoot.
