I have received 2 notifications of PMs this evening but no messages have arrived. Is the system just generating random notifications?

Are you sure they are PM's? They could be notifications that threads you subscribed to have had posts? The system does nto e-mail you when you get a PM - at least it doesnt e-mail me and I get them almost every day.

To read your PM you have to follow the link to the PM site and read it there.
