The appropriate point size army for the map?

I have been playing a few games recently using 500 point armies and, am beginning to wonder if these may be too large for the size of the map.
Now admittedly I have been playing in games using a high percentage of light cavalry that obviously requires a more extensive use of the map than, say heavy infantry dominated games.
However, I'm wondering if there is a recommended army point size for challenges, or if this has been discussed before?

Cheers.

The map size changes for the points value, so there is really no appropriate size for a challenge. It all depends on what you enjoy. I like 600 point battles because you get to use some of the neat troops that you would not otherwise pick for a smaller game. I think 500 is the minimum I play. I am playing some very large battles right now (850 and 1000). I usually don't do that either, but it can be fun with the right army (Sassanid Persians and Mongols, for example).

I don't know the points cut-off for map size increases. That would be useful information if someone has it.

The FOG Wiki has this . . .

From this information it seems that shooty-horse type armies would generally do better at 450pts than 500pts. It is something that I will be taking into account while I am making my Ottoman series of scenarios.
