Break off when hit by pursuer this turn

I think this has come up before but I looked through pages of old posts and couldn't find it.
Here's what happened in last night's game :
My Dailami charged a BG of Ghilman, contacting one file. Not much happened in the impact or melee, and my Dailami remained steady. In the melee phase a BG of my lancers broke the enemy BG they were fighting and pursued into the enemy Ghilman BG, hitting the other file. This combat should be carried out in the following impact phase. However, in the JAP the enemy Ghilman BG has half of its front rank bases in contact with steady foot so it breaks off. So my Lancers never get to fight their impact combat against the Ghilman.
Did we play this right - should the Ghilman have broken off ?
(Subsequently my (average) lancers charged the Ghilman, were quickly broken, the Ghilman pursued into my BG of 8 Dailami and very nearly broke them, dropping them to Fragmented before they recovered. Had the Ghilman not broken off I would have had 8 dice to four in the next melee phase).
