here we have enemy spear (sp) facing South,
3 units of enemy light foot (lf) in front of spears facing South
3 units of cav lancer in front of lf facing North (lcr)
1 unit of cavalry (cav) in a column facing west
the gap between the sp and lcr was 40mm
the cavalry charged the lf unit highlited in capitals, West
the front right corner of the light foot was nearly corner to corner with the nearest lcr unit (but no part in front) Q at what point does the not moving at all for evaders count if within 1 mu of enemy (does it have to be partly to front or within any part of enemy?????

Not entirely clear on your question.

If I am right the Cav are forcing the LF to evade along the gap between the other BG so they are heading off to the left. The stop 1 MU from enemy is only if they would hit the enemy, so going down the gap is OK.

They only stop 1 MU away if using all legal methods of shifting, etc they cannot avoid the enemy BG.

And yes, that can mean in some cases no evade at all happens.

apoligies for poor diagram , but the resolution i am getting is if enemy obstruct path of evaders "direction faced irrelavent" and you cannot avoid using normal rules you stop or possibly not move at all.
