Hello Comrades,

As I continue salivating eagerly waiting to play CTGW, which has once again been postponed, I'm biting at the bit to get a good taste of a decent WWI PC game. Is there one out there? Ageod's (WWI) had a ton of bugs (They released the game way too early, plus the battles were very anti-climatic) and Guns of August was too "board-like" for me, lol...I'm 26 and was born after the "Avalon Hill" era etc..
Also, on the Lordz Studio and Slitherine websites CTGW is scheduled for a "Q3 2011" release date, now granted I'm not in the business world (I'm a Medic/Firefighter) Does that mean months August, September, October or October, November, December?

My favourite WWI game, is Over Flanders Field -Between Heaven and Hell (Phase III).
It's more than just a mod for the MS Combat Flight Simulator III, because it really overhauls the engine, tweaked AI, etc, etc, etc.
It's the only game that I know, that can really immerses you in WWI. The campaign is outstanding and it's 100% historical accurate. I've the real feeling, as much it's possible in a game, of being in WWI.
I know RoF (Rise of Flight). I have it with 95% of all planes. But while it has a better flight and damage model, it doesn't give the immersion feeling that OFF gives you. Can't wait for Phase IV.

Own this one and just watch it again about 2 weeks ago.
The dog fights are great.

It's not much in depth, they are just those, that in a quick overview, fall in "my favourite" category.
WWI, occupies, by far, the biggest part of my military history book collection.
I'm a WWI junkie. Funny, I usually don't like most of WWI games.
I've just remembered one, that was quite good at the time was Historyline.

Never read, but is already in the list for future reading. That's a must one.
For modern WWI fiction I also sugest Pat Barker's "Regeneration" trilogy and Patricia Anthony's "Flanders".

Oppinions differ but I despised that one All the evil germans flying in red Fokker triplanes and the uber evil german flying a black one. That didn't do it for me.

I enjoyed the Red Baron far more. It's still a bit cliché with the love affair etc but at least has some nice historical details and characters. And the uber evil german is (mostly) flying a red Albatros biplane

That does look like a good one to see. In fact it is now in position 1 of my Netflix list.

Well, to be honest I didn't like Flyboys nor Red Baron. Little accuracy.
Still think, that English, TV series Wings produced in the 70's, is the most accurate.
A pity they cancelled the show. We only have the first years of the air war, until the Fokker Scourge events.

While we wait, why not watch the best documentary, IMO, so far about WWI air War. I've imported my edition from Australia.

I’m sure you’re correct on that VPaulus, but for me Flyboys was just about the action air combat scenes. And also something you should be able to appreciate (in reference to your sound mod); I loved the sound of the weapons, especial in the frontline trench scene.

AhAh! Not really. Movies are not the most accurate source to pick up real sounds. Sometimes they use real replicas, but most of the times, they just go the easy way and forget about accuracy.

Ok, I wasn’t clear on how I meant that.
Not for the accuracy but just the way it sounded. The metallic, eerie sound of death. It makes you want run but at the same time, it draws you in.

4 Years of Thunder - Air war (already mentioned).
World War One in Colour- Some inaccurate colour choices, but still quite interesting.
The Great War BBC - This was made in 1964, but it's maybe the greatest WWI documentary. It's said, that this was the inspiration for the greatest documentary about WWII, "World at War".

I'm currently reading:

1914-1918 'The History of The First World War' by David Stevenson, which is an excellent read tells the story from all factions perspective. It doesn't go into huge detail about any specific battle(s) but it gives a nice overview and is a decent starting point to read up on WWI

I recently watched:

'The Lost Battalion' which focuses on an American Battalion trapped in the Argonne Forest in 1918, very enjoyable movie and some "nice" battle scenes depicted.
