Air combat noob question

I played the game shortly after it was released and remember being able to build up enough fighters to destroy the other sides airpower. I used to be able to attack an enemy fighter multiple times with different fighter groups in order to destroy them.

Ive recently dived back into it with GS2 and am finding it very hard to gain air superiority. The rule that you can only attack an enemy fighter group once per turn makes it extremely difficult to achieve. Almost to the point where you are better off putting those points into ground units and leaving the air force as a defensive counter measure. Am i missing something?

you can 'hit' intercepters twice,

1 - draw them up by attacking something nearby
2 - the attack them with a second FTR

it wasn't really realistic to be able to attack as many times as you want

Thanks for the clarification.

I never thought it was terribly unrealistic to hit them multiple times. I resolved it as pounding their home airfield. Consequence of basing your fighters near the front line.

If you look at air loss stats from WWII, units didn't get destroyed, they were reduced and taken out of the line

this is well simulated by GS, now you could argue destruction is also a simulation of this!

the question then becomes what 'works' game wise
