number of chat lines visible

Hi, when sending chat during a PBEM game If the chat is more than 1 line in length the 2nd or more lines are cutoff and can not be read.
I am playing the Mac version vs a player using the PC version (1.6)

Does this apply only when typing it, when viewing older messages, or all the time?
