This is a pretty amazing firsthand, almost unedited account of a German soldier on the Eastern Front:
Eastern Inferno: The Journals of a German Panzerjager on the Eastern Front, 1941-43
By: Hans Roth, Christine, editor Alexander, Mason, editor Kunze
It was only recently published, having been kept in the attic of the author's daughter since the war.
I'd say that it has completely changed my impression of the early part of Barbarrosa – the siege of Kiev sounds like something out of WW 1.
