Out of interest at what point is the Roman Player required to confirm if his Auxilia units are being deployed as MI or HI .We have been unable to locate the relevant section in the rules or army lists. As the cost of the unit is the same, can the Roman player decide to field the Auxilia as MI or HI after the terrain is placed (similar to the deployment rules relating to use of mounted troops as dismounted troops) or when the army list is produced at the start of pre-battle initiative. I must admit I have always taken the later option ( I only have the Auxilia on Medium bases) but with the amount of training in "real life" the Auxilia should have been able to cover both of the artificial destinctions we use between medium & heavy foot. Mind you a case can be made for the legionaries being able to function in the Medium role if required by the terrain. I assume this will redundent in V2 if the Auxillia are to be forced to be taken as heavy foot but if a proportion can be fielded as a light foot the same issue will occcur

The normal process is whent he army list is created you choose.
So the idea is you choose before you know who you are playing or what the battlefield looks like.
It is generally not viewed that the troops are changing fighting style, but rather your view on which represents more accurately their historical operations.

That's correct. So people always field them how they would have fought historically, not as Medium Infantry so that they have something to go into the rough terrain with

Which, IMO, is not very historical. For V2 they have thought about different things to do with MF, but who knows.
