new to the game and wish to know which ancient army is able to" skirmish or hit and run" with effectiveness? thank you. most interested in a guerilla tactics play style, heavy on use of terrain and the disruption of forces etc...

The best skirmish/hit and run armies are mounted in this game. So they don't want any terrain.
A particular date range you are interested in would give more chance of a good reply

In that book the good hit and run type armies would be Huns or Palmyrans. Sassanid also good but slightly heavier.
In the ancient period Light Horse are the most effective hit and run types. light foot are also good - cheaper but slower.
However, you may also want something that can hit hard - mounted lancers can do that.

Probably the lead contender for this would be the Medieval Hungarians, but it looks like you're after something earlier. I'd concur with other's saying Palmyrans are good.
Trouble is, the way these armies fight in Version 2 is debatable... so I'd hate you to go build an army only to find that light horse isn't as good as skirmishing cavalry... but I'm not on the BETA group, so I really don't know what's being discussed.

I would like to add that hit and run is really not a sustainable tactic in a FoG game as they are set piece battles.
You can have the skirmish types to soften the enemy but then need something hard to follow that up. In Legions Triumphant there are many lancer cavalry plus skirmisher type armies that would suite this well. If you want maximum manouver Palmyran, IMO, is a bit slow being a cataphract hit, armoured lancer cavalry is much more nimble and impacts just as well so perhaps Alans or if you can really use manouver Early Ostrogoth.
Or if you want to use terrain Dominate Roman, but thats the dark side

Additionally, there is no difference between a Cataphract hitting a unit of Protected infantry and an Armoured Lancer hitting a unit of Protected Infantry. Having said that, I run a Palmyran army, so...

The main thing in that period (and indeed any period) is to avoid barbarian foot armies like the plague. They struggle against just about everything.
How they are armed doesnt really make any difference. If they are undrilled Hf or MF who want to fight they just dont work very well.

You should also note that you cannot rely on there being much bad terrain on the battlefield, so light foot may not have anywhere to run to. And they are not very safe even when in terrain.

Palmyran are a good option.
Here is a report of a solo game with 3 cataphracts BG and 13 skirmish BGs
http://www.miniatures4wargamers.com/bat ... _palmyran/
What's nice with this army is that you could also play it heavier later with the roman BGs options.

The tactical Tips section and army guides might be useful reading too
