This may already have been answered before, but is the only way to up front see what special attributes you may have for a unit is by re-naming them?
I know you can click on history for the unit, but who wants to do that each turn, am I missing something

Not missing anything, renaming is at the moment the best method to know which units have which heroes.

Is this to be addressed in the first patch, it is somewhat important?
