Never used these even in FOG:A, but with artillery having a > range I'm thinking they have their place in FOG:R.

So... is there anything stopping me buying Field Fortifications in a main list and putting allies in there?

I don't think there is really. The troops that will be behind FF's will be allied artillery along side non-allied Artillery, so I can see the engineers building ramparts for their friends while they are building them for their main employer.

I believe any troops in your army can man your FF's so put in the allied arty if you want, just dont forget that you wont be able to pivot your guns and remain behind the FF so its easier for your opponent to not deploy in your arc.
