3 x 4 average DH armoured
2 x 2 hvy guns
1 x 2 med guns
2 x 6 average pike and shot
1 x 4 dragoons
1 x 4 average moutned carbine
I played the French, and was determined to play with some French Elan! deployment was as follows....

From french view, my left flank was held by 2 dragoon regiments, the centre had 2 average and the guard foot in front with 3 more average in support 2 heavy guns on a gentle hill towards my right flank, my right flank was offering open terrain so the might of the French cavalry was deployed here, 2 superior and 2 elite units.

Against this, the germans has deployed the mounted carbine and dragoons against the french left, 2 foot units and the three gun batterys loomed against my centre, and on the right, there was a impressive amounts of determined horse deployed in division and they looked intent on getting into the fight early!

Battle was joined!
Early turns
The french hurried a dragoon regiment forwards to slow the advance of the german cavalry, in the centre some French manouverings appeared to cause nothing other than to slow the advance, on the french left the skirmish battle was began with inefffective shooting from the two dragoons regiment against the lone carbine horse.... long range reducing the effectiveness as the French tried to entice the germans towards an enclosed field.

French artillery on the german horse did nothing, but the massed Germans batteries in the centre, casused terrible losses on the French infantry, one unit broke early from losses, leaving a gaping hole in the French centre..... a hole quickly spotted by the German commander who ordered one of the German cavalry units into it!

More French infantry were diverted from the assault on the German centre to try to hold the marauding german horse at bay, while the guard continued their advance towards the guns and sure victory!

But was time running out for the French attack, as the German cavalry was threatening the break through the centre the French horse was finally ordered forwards....

Sensing the Germans were going to wrap the French flank and prressured by another two infantry unit falling to the german guns, the French general ordered a general charge, with units fully stoked up with commanders in each, an all or nothing assault was launched on the German horse

with a mighty crash, the French fell upon their enemy, hoping that impact mounted rating from the garlic would overwhlem the stench of sausage from the enemy lines....dice were rolled............. the French got hits!

but were first matched by the ruthless efficiency of the Germans, and then began taking losses

with the tide turning, the French guard made it to the gun line, failing only one morale test on the way in, ofc it was the one just before the impact so there intial asault was repulsed with ease by the Germans, before the laast of the French horse chared into two German units in a hope to'get lucky'......

a vain effort and as they broke from the combat the French army has reached its break point and routed from the field in disgrace.... its a sad day for wargaming when new army loses its first game.........
Another great game , my opponent played with great skill and had an effective plan delivered well on the table, he spotted my mistakes and reacted quickly using his cavalry to out manouver my infantry and exploit weaknesses caused by the guns who were quite effective in this game...
for my part, my plan in hindsight was more than a little limp, stetched too far across the table and not
delivering a clear enough message its manouverings served only to weaken its impact on the table..... its a great game when the plan is more important than the army list, well done authors / playtesteds FOG ren continues to impress us as a game and is yet to provide one un winnable game....
